The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines can help you and your family make wise choices about physical activity to improve your health, help prevent disease and allow you to get the most out of life.

There are separate guides for adults, older adults, and children and youth. Each guide is available in English and French, in an easy-to-read, one-page format. Support materials are also available for all the guides. These materials include:

  • handbooks for adults and older adults to help them build physical activity into daily life
  • information for parents and teachers
  • interactive magazines for children and youth
  • a physical activity chart with stickers for children.

The guides, handbooks and support materials:

  • describe the three different activity groups:
    • endurance (activities that help your heart and lungs stay healthy to give you more energy)
    • flexibility (activities that help your joints and muscles move more easily)
    • strength (activities that help strengthen your bones and muscles).
  • suggest a variety of physical activities to help you gain and maintain your endurance, flexibility and strength
  • tell you about how much physical activity you should do each day
  • compare the risks of being inactive with the many benefits of being active
  • describe how to start building physical activity into your daily routine
  • advise you on how to get the most out of your journey to becoming more active
  • give examples of how some people started to be more active
  • list community organizations that can help you become physically active.
