The Alberta Centre for Active Living (formerly the Alberta Centre for Well-Being) has carried out a survey every second year since 1995 to monitor the status of physical activity in Alberta.

Breathing Easier with Telehealth Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common lung disorder most often caused by smoking. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is an effective way to treat COPD, but currently in Canada there are enough PR programs to serve only 1.2% of the COPD population. Also, patients in rural areas have the least access to PR. This WellSpring looks at a pilot PR program delivered to rural areas in Alberta via Telehealth videoconference technology. Although we have some information about the distribution of Canada's Physical Activity Guides, we do not know whether Canadians are aware of the guides and whether they are actually using them. To fill this information gap, questions relating to awareness and use of the guides were included on a large survey of recreation participation in Alberta sponsored by the provincial government. This Research Update article looks at the results of this survey.
